It is a time of freedom and fear, of Gaia and of borders, of many paths and the widening of a universal toll road, emptying country and swelling cities, of the public bought into privacy and the privacy of the public sold into invisible data banks and knowing algorithms. It is the time of the warrior's peace and the miser's charity, when the planting of a seed is an act of conscientious objection.

These are the times when maps fade and direction is lost. Forwards is backwards now, so we glance sideways at the strange lands through which we are all passing, knowing for certain only that our destination has disappeared. We are unready to meet these times, but we proceed nonetheless, adapting as we wander, reshaping the Earth with every tread.

Behind us we have left the old times, the standard times, the high times. Welcome to the irregular times.

Nader Stumbles Across America
Sunday, April 25, 2004

Ralph Nader says that he's running for President because Americans are angry with liberals and the Democrats. So is it true? Well, one good measure of whether Americans agree with what Mr. Nader says is how much of an organization Nader has been able to bring together to support his candidacy.

So far, the Nader campaign is looking like a pathetic failure. After Nader failed in his effort to get on the ballot in Oregon, his effort to obtain a space on the Texas ballot is going down in flames as well. Nader, who insists that he's got a grassroots campaign, has had to hire professional petition gatherers to knock on doors in Texas. Apparently, no volunteers are bothering to turn out for the job.

You've got to hand it to Nader - he's persistent. He says that if he can't get enough people to sign his petition, he'll just sue. That's Nader, all right, bravely speaking up for, um... something.
