Plus ca Congress, Plus ca Meme

“Each of them thinks of himself as intensely patriotic; but it does not take the average member long to conclude that his first duty to his country is to get himself reelected. This subconcious conviction leads to a capacity for rationalization that is almost unbelievable.”

— President Dwight D. Eisenhower, referring to members of the United States Congress in a letter dated July 22, 1957.

Funny…I heard that sentiment expressed in the sixties by Adam Clayton Powell. Interesting how the idea crosses party lines. And you’re right: The more things change, the more they stay the same.

  2. Scott says:

The former Prime Minister of Canada, Jean Chretien, unabashadely told MPs of the Liberal Party that getting re-elected was their primary job. Not “representing constituents,” not “looking out for the best interests of the country,” not “making decisions according to the policies and ethos of the Liberal Party of Canada.” But to get re-elected.
    Seems somehow antithetical to democracy.

Capitalism seems to be “somehow antithetical to democracy”, no? It didn’t take long for corporate and religious interests to take over the process of writing their own legislation through the well-known machinations of our fine government, ie. the legislators become lobbyists who then greatly influence legislation. Seems a little beyond what the “founding fathers” had in mind.

I have heard politics referred to as “the art of the possible”. But I have also seen the compulsion of those prominent to remain so no matter what, submitted for your approval: Wilbur Mills. Christ on a crutch! I STILL can’t beleive a guy like that.

As one who deals with emergency situations, you’d be surprised at how much of the effort is devoted to stabilizing the status quo and maintaining the political agenda of those in control.
