Choose Your Constitution or Your Glass

Two days ago, Republican Representative Virginia Foxx gave a warning for Americans who want to stop the government from spying on their email, Internet use and telephone calls by preventing the FISA Amendments Act from being signed into law: “America’s intelligence community has been without the tools it needs to monitor foreign terrorist communications for weeks.”

Actually, that’s not true. The Protect America Act expired, but it contained a provision to allow its spying powers to be used for an additional year after its expiration.

But, so what if Representative Foxx was telling the truth? It’s been weeks now that this supposedly huge gap in Homeland Security has existed, and what have the consequences been?

Terrorist Attack…

… with a big firecracker…

… cracking a window and a glass door.

Big whoop. This is what we need the Protect American Act and the FISA Amendments Act? This is why we need to let the government search our homes and listen to our personal communications without a search warrant? For this, we’re supposed to sacrifice our constitutional rights? To protect us from bicyclists with cherry bombs?

We’re supposed to worry, because if the FISA Amendments Act doesn’t become law, someone’s bathroom mirror could be next?

Actually, we’re not even getting that much. Remember, Representative Virginia Foxx didn’t tell the truth. The unconstitutional spy powers of the Protect America Act, which would be made permanent by the FISA Amendment Act, are still in effect, after all.

So, what this tells us is that the Department of Homeland Security is so inept that, even with unconstitutional spy powers, they can’t even protect Americans from bumbling small time amateur terrorists.

If these abusive Homeland Security spying laws can’t even do the job of stopping terrorist attacks, then why bother to have them at all?

Hm. Well, maybe it’s because the point of the FISA Amendments Act isn’t to spy on terrorists after all.
