I won’t be going to see W for a simple reason: I’ve already been seeing W for eight years too long.
W, the Oliver Stone movie starring Josh Brolin, is profoundly mis-timed. It comes when people are most exhausted with President George W. Bush. It isn’t just Bush himself who is a lame duck. Anti-Bush activism has become a lame duck as well.
There isn’t any time to hold Bush accountable for his crimes during his presidency. Impeachment is irrelevant. Any meaningful effort to confront the crimes of the Bush era is going to have to wait until after Bush is out of the White House, and a more complete version of the Bush years has been excavated.
The movie W is based on everything that’s been public about George W. Bush, the stuff we’ve been writing about for years, plus a little bit of Oliver Stone’s personal annoying imagination. We already know what’s real in the movie. We don’t need to pay money to subject ourselves to the Bush presidency again.
