Obama Extends Diwali Greetings; Will He Extend to Darwin Day?

I am pleased to read that Barack Obama has made an official statement acknowledging the south Asian religious holiday of Diwali and extending best wishes to those who celebrate it. Obama appropriately used the occasion not to demand that Americans must commemorate Rama or Krishna, and not to declare Holy War against those who do, but rather to recognize the right to freedom of expression:

Americans, despite our varied backgrounds, believe that all people are created equal, and that each person should be free to practice or not practice religion as they choose.

I sincerely hope that, should he become president, Barack Obama will have the courage to make similar statements at the commencement of Ramadan for Muslims and Darwin Day for secularists.
