Claims of Global Cooling Resurface as Globe Warms

Global warming. Global warming. Global warming.

There. I said it, and it needs to be said. Web sites like Right Side News continue to make the claim that the Earth is undergoing global cooling:

“The year 2008 marked the tenth consecutive year of no global warming. This is not widely reported or known. In fact the Earth has been cooling for the last 6 years.”

“For how many years must the planet cool before we begin to understand that the planet is not warming? For how many years must cooling go on?”—Geologist Dr. David Gee, chairman of the science committee of the 2008 International Geological Congress

“Earth has cooled since 1998 in defiance of the predictions by the U.N.-IPCC.”

You won’t find links to actual climate data, or even the original “scientific” works in the “global cooling” writing on Right Side News. Instead, you’ll find links to other rants on other right-wing websites like World Net Daily that also contain the same quotations, also without links to either original scientific works or actual climate data.

There’s a reason that these rants don’t link to original scientific work or actual climate data: actual climate data show that the globe is warming. While it is true that “the meteorological year, December 2007 through November 2008, was the coolest year since 2000,” (leading Richard Keen to declare it “the coldest of the millennium”!), cool is a relative term. NASA scientists find “was the ninth warmest year in the period of instrumental measurements, which extends back to 1880. The nine warmest years all occur within the eleven-year period 1998-2008.” The National Climatic Data Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is due to issue its final report for 2008 later this month, but in a preliminary report not including data for December concludes that “the year 2008 is on track to be one of the ten warmest years on record for the globe, based on the combined average of worldwide land and ocean surface temperatures.”

Follow the links here. The reports (from within Bush-controlled government institutions, no less) include charts, graphs, and links to raw data in droves. Variation between individual years of the current decade allow polemicists to draw out the word “cooling,” adding exclamation points while neglecting links to the actual data which show the trend beyond our current 8-year-long long-sounding “millennium.” Read the reports, look at the data, and it becomes clear in which direction global temperatures have been heading.

Accepting reality can be hard. As tough as it is, you need to do it. Man-made global warming hype is a hoax. Move on to something of real substance. If you don’t get a new cause to champion, you’ll only lack more credibility than you do now.

If what you say is in fact reality, Dan, then you’ll have some facts to back up your claims. Facts, based upon peer-reviewed research. Got any? Those who support theories of human-produced climate change have mountains. Where’s yours?

      1. Jim says:

Of course he couldn’t supply any.

There is plenty of evidence against man-made global warming and thousands of scientist disagree with Al Gore’s global warming cult. Heck, Al Gore is starting to fire scientists that question his authoritah….too funny and sad.

The fact that temps have decreased since ’98 or even plateaued contradicts what the global warming nuts say should happen, i.e. increased CO2 levels = increased temperatures. Carbon-dioxide declared as pollutant is laughable in itself.

Our government is starting to see the light on the hoax.

    1. Green Man says:

Keith, can you point to one peer-reviewed source in a pertinent scientific field? No, so instead you direct us to a Republican politician’s blog.

Where exactly is that “plenty of evidence”?

There’s a difference between a data point and a climatological trend Keith, and no, global temperatures have not decreased since ’98. The hottest year on record was since then.

Those links don’t even go anywhere but to statements declaring that “the document you requested could not be found.”
