My packing list for a presidential inauguration that weather forecasters say will be dry but cold, with temperatures lingering around the freezing mark on January 20, 2009:
To Leave Behind: Umbrella, backpack, folding chair, thermos of coffee.
The above have been prohibited from inaugural events by the U.S. Secret Service with the justification that they are potential weapons. I’d have to leave these items at a checkpoint, and I wouldn’t be able to get them back, so I’m just not going to bring them. They’d be handy, but oh well.
To Bring for Warmth: Waterproof shoes, wool socks, foot warmers, long underwear, long-sleeve shirt, hooded sweatshirt, winter coat with big inside and outside pockets, gloves, cap, yellow identifying marshall band.
To Stick in Pockets: Beef Jerky, chewing gum, plastic water bottle, cell phone, Peek device for mobile blogging, sound recorder, digital camera, extra memory cards and batteries, cash.
In Hand: Ten 18×18 cardboard signs, demonstration permit.
Am I missing anything?
