Demand for Tea Party Movement Accessories Skyrockets.

Outrage surrounding surveillance and seizure without so much as a warrant, under the FISA Amendments Act, has been around for a year and a half. The “Tea Party” movement, showing anger over taxes, is about three months old.

Which movement is taking off? CafePress searches for t-shirts, bumper stickers, buttons and such over the past month:

Searches for FISA and Tea Party on CafePress through April 13, 2009

That’s a logarithmic scale. I had to use a logarithmic scale for searches on “fisa” to show up at all. Yes, the Tea Party movement may be funded by billionaires. But it is catching on. Outrage at the violation of Americans’ constitutional rights is going nowhere.

A sad statement on the values of Americans these days: Go ahead and take away their freedoms, and they’re fine with it. Put them at risk of losing some money, though, and they’re suddenly up in arms. Most Americans don’t care whether they’re free, just so long as they can be comfy.

Too bad they don’t see the connection that a government that has unrestricted power to violate the rights of its citizens also has the power to work in corrupt ways to favor the financially powerful and to keep everyone else economically insecure.
