Mother Davis opens the garden gate after she discovers,
Democrats cooperated with Republicans in the U.S. Senate to pass an amendment banning the transfer of prisoners out of Guantanamo Bay and into the United States. The legislation effectively forbids the closure of the Guantanamo prison.
Only six members of the majority-Democrat Senator had the courage to take a stand against the long-running abuses of Guantanamo. Those abuses were not just against prisoners, but against the United States Constitution, our system of justice, and our own liberty as citizens. To the extent that our government claims powers of arbitrary detention, torture, and evasion of the right to a fair and speedy trial by a jury of peers, we all become less secure.
For years, Democrats in Congress have criticized Republicans for years for supporting the abuses of Guantanamo, but the Democrats never managed to actually do anything to stop the abuses. There have been years of excuses. They said they didn’t know. They said that they just needed a majority in Congress, and then a veto-proof majority. They said they needed to win the presidency, and then they’d close Guantanamo.
Now, the Democrats have veto-proof majority and the presidency. Instead of doing what was promised, they’re voting to preserve the abuses of Guantanamo. Never has it been more clear that the Democratic Party won’t stand up to the right wing agenda.
Thanks to Dick Durbin, Tom Harkin, Patrick Leahy, Carl Levin, Jack Reed, and Sheldon Whitehouse – the only Democrats who could bring themselves to resist the will of George W. Bush today, four months after Bush left the White House for the last time.
