Drip, Drip. Two More Support Commission on Torture & Wiretaps

Representatives Dennis Kucinich of Ohio and Jim McDermott of Washington have added their support for H.R. 104, a bill to establish a National Commission on Presidential War Powers and Civil Liberties. The commission would have the power to compel testimony through subpoena at its hearings, and would be tasked with generating a public report of its findings. The subject matter of this commission: extraordinary rendition, “enhanced interrogation techniques,” warrantless surveillance of Americans, and other abuses of presidential authority.

The addition of Representatives Kucinich and McDermott brings the total number of supporters of the National Commission in the House to 48. That number is lower than what’s needed to bring legislation successfully to the floor. I’m disappointed that there aren’t more members of Congress interested using the power of legislation to check the abuses of the executive, but every new member of Congress supporting H.R. 104 brings Americans one step closer to uncovering the truth of what our government has done behind our backs. We’re two steps closer today.

These are the 48 members of Congress who formally support H.R. 104:

If your member of Congress is not on that list, click here to find his or her phone number and make that call.

I made my call today, to the offices of my representative in Congress, Mary Jo Kilroy. More than three months ago I sent a letter asking for Kilroy’s position on the topic, and I am still waiting for a response. In my call today, Kilroy’s field director told me that I’d be receiving a letter any day now. That’s exactly what I was told two months ago; I’ll believe it when I see it. Until then, I will continue to write and call and pester my member of Congress into not only responding to her constituent but into doing the right thing. I hope you will do the same.
