Why have a World Oceans Day? The world’s oceans are experiencing a severe ecological crisis, that’s why. Climate change, pollution and overfishing are causing populations of ocean animals to fluctuate in wild surges and crashes.
So, how has our society responded to this crisis? According to the National Ocean Economics Program State of the U.S. Ocean and Coastal Economies 2009 report, the federal government’s spending on programs related to the oceans was 0.03 percent of the total federal budget in 2008, down from 0.06 percent in 1970.
