And He Met With Barney the Dinosaur on Deforestation

Why?

Mr. Brosnan met with Obama administration officials in May to talk about his favorite cause, saving the whales. Mr. DiCaprio spent 10 minutes with President Obama in the Oval Office a couple of months ago to talk about the environment. Mr. Clooney weighed in on the humanitarian crisis in Darfur.

    Why?

Because the public doesn’t know or care who the real experts on marine mammals, Darfur, and the environment are.

Because the public doesn’t care who the real experts on marine mammals, Darfur and the environment are.

Because there aren’t glossy magazines about the love lives and beach bodies of the real experts on marine mammals, Darfur and the environment in the checkout lines in supermarkets.

Because the distinction between entertainment and news has collapsed to the point that all of our information is presented in a glossy, celebrity-obsessed, superficial, dumbed-down way–indulging the public’s disdain for “policy wonks” (i.e. people who understand things in depth and have detailed suggestions for what to do about things).

    Lots of reasons.

Gee, wouldn’t it be nice if the President made time for everyone and their opinion about their favorite issue?

i have a feeling it all “goes in one ear and out the other”
as my mother used to say.
