Last week, Reverend Todd Jones of the First Presbyterian Church in Nashville, Tennessee made a prayer standing before the U.S. House of Representatives. He prayed, “Establish this Nation in righteousness, O God, and grant that we may be makers of peace, artisans of goodness, and keepers of the bright light of freedom.”
Wow. That sounds pretty good. Righteousness and freedom, peace and artisans.
So, how come God hasn’t done it yet? Isn’t God supposed to be all powerful? Why couldn’t he carry this one off?
What, is that not the way that prayer works? Well, if that’s true, why bother having these prayers in front of Congress? Just to help religious preachers get a career boost?
