Marc Mutty On Leave? Salary of SFMM Director Still Paid by Roman Catholic Church

Until June of this year, Marc Mutty’s job title was Director of Public Affairs for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland. Then his job title switched, and he became the Chair of Stand for Marriage Maine, a group trying to make same-sex marriage against the law in Maine. News reports consistently describe Marc Mutty as “on leave” from his job with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland so he can “work for” Stand for Marriage Maine instead.

Portland Press Herald, July 15 2009:

Marc Mutty, now on leave from his job as public affairs director for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland to run Stand for Marriage Maine.

Kennebec Sun Journal, July 16 2009:

Marc Mutty, on leave from his job with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland and chairman of the Stand for Maine Marriage PAC, said he was happy with the fundraising efforts so far, but added that the campaign had just begun.

Associated Press, October 8 2009:

Stand for Marriage’s top leaders are a generation older, both with church backgrounds. Marc Mutty is on leave from his job as public affairs chief for the Catholic diocese…

Washington Post, October 9 2009:

Inside, Mutty, the campaign’s chairman on leave from the diocese, wore suspenders over his jean shirt and complained…

Kennebec Sun Journal, July 17 2009:

Marc Mutty, a leader of the group seeking to repeal the law who is on leave from his work at the diocese…

Associated Press, October 14 2009:

We are under budget and we need to raise some serious dollars in the next few days and weeks,” said Marc Mutty, who is on leave from his public affairs post with the Catholic Diocese of Portland to work for the campaign.

Is Marc Mutty really “on leave” from his job with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland when he works as the Chair of Stand for Marriage Maine?

Consider what Mutty admitted to the Washington Post last week:

The chairman of Stand for Marriage Maine said he agreed to lead the opposition campaign “because my boss told me to.” His boss is Richard Malone, bishop of the Portland Roman Catholic diocese…

And who is paying Marc Mutty’s salary as the Chair of Stand for Marriage Maine? A quick expenditures search of Maine’s campaign finance website reveals the answer. The following are all payments made to Marc Mutty for his work directing Stand for Marriage Maine:

Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland 9/15/2009 Mutty, Marc Portland ME 04112 $4,937.12
Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland 8/15/2009 Mutty, Marc Portland ME 04112 $4,937.12
Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland 7/15/2009 Mutty, Marc Portland ME 04112 $4,937.12
Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland 6/29/2009 Mutty, Marc Portland ME 04112 $900.00
Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland 6/15/2009 Mutty, Marc Portland ME 04112 $4,937.12
Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland 6/4/2009 Mutty, Marc Portland ME 04112 $2,888.73
Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland 6/4/2009 Mutty, Marc Portland ME 04112 $458.00

All of Marc Mutty’s salary continues to be paid by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, and he’s doing what the Bishop tells him to do in an anti-gay campaign that is funded almost exclusively by four large religious organizations, including, you guessed it, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland.

In what sense is Marc Mutty “on leave?”

  • In the sense that the truth is on leave in the anti-equality agenda.

I look forward to seeing whether the people of Maine are willing to allow religious groups to impose their beliefs on everyone else, in contradiction to the guarantees of the Constitution of the United States of America. It seems to me that the anti-equality organizations are not behaving in a very patriotic manner.
