420 Days and Counting: Barack Obama Fails to Appoint Privacy and Civil Liberties
When a reauthorization of Patriot Act surveillance powers was sent to President Barack Obama’s desk, he signed it within two days, even though he was not required to do so by law.
President Obama is required under federal law to appoint a Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board. It is the job of this board to set standards for training federal intelligence, investigation, and data mining officers in compliance with the civil liberties standards set out by the constitution. It is also the job of this board to review the behavior of government officers and report to Congress on violations of Americans’ constitutional rights that have occurred.
420 days into his administration, Barack Obama has failed to appoint a single member of the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board. The board does not exist. Its activities are going undone.
How much longer will the President ignore the law? How much longer will the government ignore Americans’ rights?
