Last summer, a small tornado caused minor damage to the steeple of a Lutheran church that had embraced equal rights for gays and lesbians. Baptist Pastor John Piper saw opportunity. Pastor Piper promptly wrote and shared a 625-word essay to his followers declaring that the tornado was an expression of God’s wrath against gay people who had the temerity to not be ashamed of themselves. Piper asserted that “Jesus Christ controls the wind, including all tornados,” that God will exclude homosexual fornicators people from His Kingdom, and that the tornado was a “firm warning” not only against gays but against the Lutheran Church for embracing equal rights.
Last night, Hawaii enjoyed a placid and warm night of weather after its state legislature legalized same-sex unions. Arkansas was not so fortunate. A tornado touched down at 8:06 pm last night, destroying the Sweet Home Baptist Church.
There is no post this morning from John Piper to remind us that “Jesus Christ controls the wind, including all tornados,” or to suggest that God has punished the Sweet Home Baptist Church for its stance on same-sex marriage.
