Christian Group Dedicated To Overthrow Of US Government
This week, the American Family Association issued a call for the overthrow of the government of the United States of America. The extremist Christian organization called upon its members to struggle for the destruction of Constitutional rule, the foundation of government in the USA.
The American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer called upon his radical followers to plot for the destruction of the First Amendment of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of religion for all Americans.
Fischer’s plan is to replace the current U.S. government with a Christian theocracy in which followers of Islam are not allowed to practice their religion. Fischer’s attack on freedom of religion would begin with a ban on the construction of mosques – not just in certain places, but anywhere within the borders of the United States.
Fischer sent out a message of Christian jihad to his followers, declaring that, “Permits should not be granted to build even one more mosque in the United States of America, let alone the monstrosity planned for Ground Zero. This is for one simple reason: each Islamic mosque is dedicated to the overthrow of the American government.”
Let’s follow Fischer’s reasoning: The construction of mosques should be banned because mosques are dedicated to the overthrow of the American government. But, the American Family Association’s anti-mosque campaign itself is dedicated to the overthrow of the American government. Should we therefore ban the construction of all buildings by the American Family Association?
A side note: It’s not true to say that every Islamic mosque is dedicated to the overthrown of the American government. In order to justify this claim, Bryan Fischer cited a single statement by just one Islamic organization, the Muslim Brotherhood.
The Muslim Brotherhood doesn’t represent all Muslims, or even most Muslims, or even a significant minority of Muslims. The Muslim Brotherhood is an illegal opposition organization in Egypt. Besides that, the statement that Bryan Fischer cites doesn’t specifically call for the overthrow of the American government, or even the targeting of any particular aspect of the American government, such as the First Amendment that Fischer and the American Family Association seek to destroy.
That doesn’t mean that the Muslim Brotherhood is a nice group. It doesn’t mean that there are no Muslims that seek to overthrow the American government. However, there are Christian extremist groups, such as the Hutaree militia, right here in the United States, that have the explicit goal of overthrowing the American government. The existence of these militant Christian groups does not make it necessary for the construction of new Christian churches to be banned. Neither does the existence of a small minority of militant Muslims in a far away country make it necessary for the construction of new mosques to be forbidden.
