The explosion on the Mariner offshore drilling rig did not cause as large an oil spill as took place after the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon. Some people may be celebrating that we dodged that bullet, but look out – there are more bullets on the way.
This weekend, while most of the USA was on vacation, a big fuel tanker went beneath the waves off the coast of Thailand near Phuket. Over in India, the parties of Goa have been restrained while trucks transport tons of tar balls washed up from an oil spill in order to be incinerated. That new oil spill took place not far down the coast from where another oil spill struck Mumbai last month.
The larger truth lost in coverage of extreme disasters like the Deepwater Horizon is that significant oil spills are taking place almost all the time. Humanity’s dependence upon fossil fuels comes at a terrible price.
