Tea Party Goes Openly Republican With RightNetwork

Remember back in the early days of the Tea Party “movement”, when Tea Party protests were supposed to be spontaneous, and Tea Partiers were outraged at suggestions that their events had been secretly organized by Republican operatives? Remember how they said that the Tea Party wasn’t about Right vs. Left, but about independent voices who were just mad as hell?

That pretense has been officially abandoned now, with the founding of RightNetwork. Tea Party Patriots, a Republican-funded organization that declares itself to be the “Official Home of the American Tea Party Movement”, has introduced RightNetwork, a new TV channel that is explicitly Republican in its identity.

“Today, we are proud to bring to you the first true salvo in the culture war in America… RightNetwork. RightNetwork is television for tea partiers… RightNetwork; because it’s the ‘right’ thing to do.” Right – get it? The Tea Party now no longer claims to transcend the differences between Right and Left. It’s a partisan of the Right completely.

This new TV channel doesn’t make any pretense about being independent, or even being “fair and balanced” The official mascot of RightNetwork is the same as the Republican Party’s mascot: The elephant, changed only to show the animal in a new pose, an improbable run.

Could they make it any more clear? The Tea Party isn’t grassroots. It’s a corporate-funded television network. The Tea Party isn’t independent. It’s a flag-waving Right wing Republican creation.

Are you willing to hide your face behind that banner?

  • “…from 2005 to 2008, the Koch[ brothers of Koch Industries] vastly outdid ExxonMobil in giving money to organizations fighting legislation related to climate change, underwriting a huge network of foundations, think tanks, and political front groups. …Venable—a longtime political operative who draws a salary from Americans for Prosperity, and who has worked for Koch-funded political groups since 1994—spoke less warily. “We love what the Tea Parties are doing, because that’s how we’re going to take back America!” ”
