Of all the groups that purport to be founded on the principles of grassroots activism, the majority are top-down big organizations with an emphasis on fundraising. The Progressive Precinct Project aims to be something different: A tool for genuine political organization from the ground up. The PPP says of itself: “Precincts are the foundation, the grass roots, of the entire political structure. They are the source of all power in the American political process. We are here to take that power for progressives.”
The idea is to get progressive activists to organize themselves in electoral precincts, the smallest political districts there are, and to take those precincts over from right-leaning machine Democrats. It looks as if the Progressive Precinct Project is just on the verge of genuine activation, but if enough people join in this movement, it has a shot of actually working.
