Rick Santorum Talks To Plants About Science

Everything that’s wrong with the Rick Santorum for President campaign is represented in one statement Rick Santorum made yesterday at a campaign appearance in Biloxi, Mississippi.

green anti-santorum campaign buttonExplaining why he doesn’t believe that global warming is real, Santorum said, “The dangers of carbon dioxide? Tell that to a plant, how dangerous carbon dioxide is.”

What does Santorum think will happen if I go and tell a plant how dangerous unnatural carbon dioxide emissions are? Will the plant explain to me how wrong I am? Will the plant provide a story about its personal experience with carbon dioxide emissions?

No, that won’t happen. You see, plants… don’t… have… conversations. Plants… don’t… listen… when… people… talk.

It’s an important detail that Rick Santorum seems to have missed: Plants are not experts on climatology. Plants don’t understand science. Plants don’t have brains.

Rick Santorum seems to be trying to say that because carbon dioxide is taken in by plants to enable their metabolic processes, carbon dioxide couldn’t possibly cause global warming. He’s missing, however, the essential point that planetary climate and plants are not the same thing. There isn’t any scientific hypothesis of climate change that claims that the interaction of carbon dioxide and plants is to blame for global warming.

Besides that, evidence shows that, in many places, increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide are harming crop yields in places like Russia and India, not helping them. If Rick Santorum thinks that he can gain wisdom by talking to plants, he ought to talk to the plants there.

Dang it, Ricky, don’t make me say this again. Just as a weed is a plant in the wrong place and the wrong quantity, so too a pollutant is a chemical in the wrong place and the wrong quantity.

    Why do I bother?

Stupid was once as supid does. It is now far more dangerous.

The dangers of flooding? Tell that to a fish, how dangerous flooding is.

You’ve got to admire the logic.
