What's It All For, Anyway?

Bullshit aside, what do you want to do with the rest of your life?

  • Uncover hidden truths and share them. Play with puppies. Sleep well. Find the elusive healthy potato chip. Snorkel.

Grow old with my wife and young with my grandbabies. Give my kids good advice and ever less frequent financial aid. Work outside more. Help cure a disease. Fire a Barrett M82 on a thousand yard range. Grow a new set of teeth.

  • I want to make a contribution to our culture to make it deeper and less self-destructive.

i’d like to know what it’s all for. It looks as if it’s down to some trivial personal comfort or self-made reason and that otherwise the question isn’t answerable for the entire globe, humanity or life. It would have been nice if we had taken care of the place so that those coming after us had a future to look forward to that didn’t involve catastrophic climate change and certain extinction before the next century. In fact, maybe that’s WHY the question has no answer – that we’re only looking to accumulate as much “wealth” individually as possible (to supposedly “guarantee” our children and family has it “easier” once we’re gone) and that there isn’t some overarching meaning to our lives at all. Had it been about stewardship and had we evolved cooperatively and sentiently so that our lizard brains actually learned something besides “cleverness” (like to stop procreating when there are already too many of us for the planet to provide for, or to restrict our greed), then things might have turned out differently.

    Ah, maybe next time . . .
