The Democratic Party establishment has been a poor representative of the liberal political views of the rank and file, especially since Barack Obama took to the Oval Office. On issue after issue, Democratic political insiders have defended President Obama’s adoption and expansion of the policies of George W. Bush.
Grassroots liberal activists, however, are proving to be less disappointing. After a few years of confused disorientation during which many had to come to terms with the fact that Barack Obama would never be the progressive champion they had hoped he would be, American liberals are placing themselves squarely in opposition to Obama’s Republican-friendly economic, environmental, military and security policies.
We didn’t find news of it in the major corporate journalistic outlets, but just a few days ago, Barack Obama was confronted by hundreds of angry liberal protesters gathered outside the home of the wealthy sponsors of his latest fundraiser. The protesters carried signs opposing proposed environmental exemptions for the XL Pipeline and decrying Obama’s rightward slide on civil liberties, criticizing his imprisonment of Bradley Manning, continued operation of the unconstitutional prison at Guantanamo Bay, and deployment of unarmed drone aircraft to bomb civilians overseas and spy on people without any search warrant here in the United States.
On Thursday, World Can’t Wait is organizing a Day of Action To Close Guantanamo, in yet another sign that, although the leaders of the Democratic Party may have embraced the policies of George W. Bush, liberal Americans have not.
