Year after year, the Obama Administration has been working with Republicans to push for more offshore drilling for oil and natural gas, in ever more remote and risky places. President Obama says not to worry, that the fossil fuels companies are experts at safety and know what they’re doing.
Reality tells a different story. Month after month, we witness terrible accidents with fossil fuels. People get hurt and killed. Natural habitats get fouled.
This morning, we’re learning that two barges filled with unprocessed gasoline have exploded on the Mobile River in Alabama. Three people are critically injured, and may die. The barges weren’t involved in any complicated maneuvers. They were simply undergoing a routine cleaning.
If the fossil fuels industry can’t guarantee safety in such calm and temperate waters, why should we believe that they’ll be able to conduct safe and clean oil drilling operations in the Arctic Ocean, or in the depths of the Gulf of Mexico?
