Are We Orwellian Yet?

“There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug into your wire whenever they wanted to. You had to live – did live, from habit that became instinct – in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and except in darkness, every movement scrutinized.” – George Orwell, 1984

I
think
we’re
there.

  1. Dave says:

The eye of Sauron is upon you. If not Orwellian, certainly Tolkienian.

We’re past there. There’s technology Orwell didn’t imagine in 1984. Like in 1984, we are subject to eavesdropping by the sate in every way we communicate unless we write with pen on paper alone in a dark corner and then hide it. Unlike 1984, our communication is permanently recorded in databases and sifted through by machines. Most people carry GPS locators on their person at all times, voluntarily.
