“There isn’t a Republican party. I wish there were, I wish there was a Republican party. I wish there was one person we could sit across the table from and make a deal and make the compromise and know when you got up from the table that the deal was done.” — Vice President Joseph Biden, February 14 2014
Think about what that means. Vice President Biden wishes the Republican Party rank and file followed their leaders like sheep? Conformity is convenient. Requiring obedience to authority is efficient way to get things done. The results might be easier for Joe Biden to understand. It wouldn’t be a way of running politics that lets leaders be thoughtful or creative. It wouldn’t allow any place for ideals or principled stands of dissent. It wouldn’t be democratic. I don’t think we should wish that for any person, party or nation.
