The League of American Bicyclists is an organization, older than anyone you know, centered around this idea:
When more people ride bikes:
Life is better for everyone;
Communities are safer, stronger and better connected;
Our nation is healthier, economically stronger, environmentally cleaner and more energy independent.
Part of what the League does is to sponsor the National Bike Challenge, in which people log in to the challenge web site to record their bicycle rides, with the goal of a total of 30 million miles between the beginning of May and the end of September.
If you start now, you’ll be a bit behind some of the early pedalers. Nonetheless, you could be part of a very long collective journey. 30 million miles is close to the minimum distance between the Earth and Mars this decade. Imagine a group of people going in a human-powered relay all the way to the Red Planet.
Of course, Mars isn’t the destination. The destination is a cleaner, safer, healthier Earth.
