Animal Rights Protests This Weekend

I had no idea, but apparently this week is Primate Liberation Week. This Saturday will see a protest in San Francisco against the airline DHL, which is accused of transporting primates from Asia to laboratories in the United States where they will be subjected to experimentation.

In Johnson City, Tennessee, Boston, Massachusetts, and Peoria, Illinois, there will be a protests against surfaces on the same day.

I am not sure how I feel about these protests. I would like to hear your thoughts.

As a biomedical scientist, I know that animal-based research is essential. And for a few sorts of studies, mostly medical, primate-based studies are essential. Human lives depend on it. And yes, I personally rate human lives to be of more value and importance than animal lives.

That said, as a past chairman of a major research university’s Animal Care and Use Committee (charged by law with overseeing animal research use), I know that the conditions in which monkeys and other primates are housed in research centers…small individual cages, with little social interaction, little enrichment, and too little exercise) are inhumane. Perfectly legal, but inhumane. Caged primates basically go nuts, just as people too long in solitary confinement cells do, too. We could do better. And we should.

The only good news here is that primate-based research is so incredibly expensive nowadays that it is not done in a cavalier manner, as it was a few decades ago. It only happens when there’s no other alternative.
