Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee would turn them away. As J. Clifford points out, Mike Huckabee promised in 2008 that he’d take away citizenship from American-born babies if they had non-citizen parents. Wrong blood = non-American? Who is Us? Who is Them?
In Germany, a group calling itself Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West (PEGIDA in German) has been staging weekly demonstrations with tens of thousands of people calling for Muslim people to be kicked out of the country. “Für die Zukunft unserer Kinder,” read the signs in German. Last year, Republican Todd Huff, Councilman for Baltimore County, declared his opposition to a charity building a home for 50 immigrant children seeking asylum from violence in Central America. His reasoning: “We have enough issues and problems in our own backyard here, and we don’t need to take on other people’s problems…. Catholic Charities does phenomenal work. But my opinion is they have to stick with the work here of our own.” Homes are for Our children. Our Own. Not Theirs.
In the state of Maine, Republican Senate Majority Leader Garrett Mason announced his plan to introduce a bill that would cancel government assistance to poor immigrant families. It’s for Us. Not Them.
