Bernie Sanders vs. Hillary Clinton on the Patriot Act (2001)

In the 2016 Democratic Party presidential primary, some comparisons are simple. If you’ve been paying any attention at all over the last fourteen years, you know that the USA PATRIOT ACT has been a vehicle to vastly expand the surveillance powers of the federal government, breaching a variety of constitutional limits.

On October 25 2001, as a member of the U.S. Senate, Hillary Clinton voted FOR the USA PATRIOT ACT.

On October 24 2001, as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Bernie Sanders voted AGAINST the USA PATRIOT ACT.

When it mattered most, in a situation of intense political pressure, Hillary Clinton made the wrong move. Bernie Sanders made the right move. If this issue matters to you, remember. If this issue matters to someone you know, help them remember.

Thank you, Bernie Sanders is sounding more like an American all the time.

  2. Marxist Hypocrisy 101 says:

Empty rhetoric that Sanders would be too happy to abandon the moment he takes office, just like Obama did. The man is far too in love with totalitarianism and the thought of himself as Supreme Dictator to ever actually oppose the Patriot Act in any way more meaningful than empty words for Useful Idiots.

It’s a good thing he’s far too incompetent, unpopular and downright crazy to ever win, then.

    1. J Clifford says:

Bernie Sanders totalitarian? Do you have any evidence to back up that claim?

As for the Patriot Act, we’ll see what Bernie Sanders does tonight. However, in the past, he has repeatedly taken concrete action to “actually oppose the Patriot Act”. See, for example: http://irregulartimes.com/2011/05/26/13-democrats-4-republicans-and-1-independent-vote-to-stop-patriot-act-reauthorization/

Ditto what J Clifford said. There are different personalities with all parties, even Socialists. Carl Marx had a distinctively bitter view of life, but also a good understanding of history. Sanders has a decidedly determined approach to politics and I suspect his life. He says what he means and carefully thinks that out first. He also has a good understanding of history, it would appear. The only way the USA will have a Supreme Dictator is if the American people allow it. There are just too many grumpy old coots with guns, and when pushed, an attitude. And too many kids that think they would make better dictators. But then again there are a good many who would just say “Go to it boys. We’ll watch the show!” If Sanders was that kind of person, he would not be where he is today. He would already be the front runner. You’re talking about Hillary Clinton. But give him time. People will see Bernie Sanders for the kind of leader he can be.
