A New Year. Is Minneapolis’ Little Mogadishu a Hotbed of Crime yet?

We have a regular visitor here who likes to predict that allowing Somali refugees to settle in the United States will utterly destroy the country because they’ll somehow engage in massive waves of crime. When we confront this visitor with actual, observable trends — which indicate that in Somali-settled communities of the United States crime rates are down since they arrived — our visitor pipes up to declare that if things aren’t bad yet, just wait! Matters will surely get worse in the future. They’ll have to, according to our visitor’s way of thinking, because he just can’t admit that an African immigrant with dark skin could do anything good for our nation. Until he admits the possibility, he’ll just keep waiting for that mythical Somali immigrant crime wave to occur. He’ll keep waiting…

and waiting…

and waiting. Well, golly, has it happened yet? Let’s take a look at “Little Mogadishu,” a neighborhood in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which is the city with the largest population of Somali immigrants in the entire United States. Two months ago, I used Minneapolis’ online crime mapping software to see whether Little Mogadishu was experiencing high crime rates. It wasn’t then, and it hadn’t for all of 2015, or all of 2014, or all of 2013, or all of 2012…

but enough counting. Let’s look forward. It’s a new year, 2016, and that means a new opportunity for our white supremacist visitor’s racist fantasies to be realized. Have they? Is Little Mogadishu a massive crime scene yet? Here’s the location of Little Mogadishu:

Cedar-Riverside Neighborhood, AKA Little Mogadishu

And here is a heat map from Minneapolis’ crime mapping website indicating where the most arrests (red and green) and least arrests (blue) have tended to be clustered so far in the year 2016, right up through today, February 9:

Little Mogadishu Crime Rate in Minneapolis, MN during 2016: low, low, low! When will people drop their prejudicial fear regarding Somali immigrants?

The neighborhood of Little Mogadishu simply isn’t where crime in Minneapolis is focused.  It hasn’t been in the past and it isn’t now.  Reality is inconsistent with anti-immigrant, anti-Somali dreams.

We have a blogger that insists on Somalis when i explained over and over again that the problem regards all the immigrants, illegals and non, coming from third world shit holes. IT IS Undeniable the crime and economic burden that uncontrolled immigration is bringing upon our citizens Likewise is occurring, on a major scale, in Europe. Haven’t we learned from that? So far we only have witnessed the failures of such policies: crime, educational failures, failure to assimilate, HIGH unemployment among the new immigrants. Undeniable, seen the levels of low education among most of our intakes, is the fact that most of immigrants, illegals and refugees first, go on welfare ALL the free goodies generously provided by taxpayers. That means , you pay as well, Cookie! Somalis? want to talk about Somalis only: Somali gangs in Minnesota are a reality, a fact. If Somalis had not been here, we wouldn’t have had Somali gangs. Didn’t we? Did we need that enrichment? Examples go beyond the Somali, involves Latin Americans and scores of other poor educated populations which are main resource of recruitment for..criminals!! Did we need all of that? We have diversity now…a very large and diverse group of criminals and, we needed that too, Jihadist fanatics!! Hoorray!! Forgot the interstate sex trafficking of Somali gangs in Minnesota? Did we need that? Credit card fraud, cell phone burglaries, these “new” much “needed” gangs are pretty active in Minneapolis! Don’t you know it? Broadly speaking, did we need the Tsarnaev brothers, or the the hundreds of Somali and other “refugees” from different culturally enriching countries, who also have joined Isis, in the US? Let me understand! Don’t we have enough crime and problems of our own? You said the crime is not where is focused in Minneapolis ? Ok!so we needed more…right? Are we to become like France where immigrants are the ones that have the monopoly of crime and terrorism? Or Sweden, where rapes were totally absent until the “enrichment occurred? Or Germany? Is that what we need? That’s the way it happened: once we brought crime to decent low levels we decided, all of a sudden, that we missed it!! So we, in the West, decided to import it!! We decided to enrich ourselves. That’s it…we missed all the BS!!! We wanted honor killings, vaginal circumcision, terrorism and all the other good stuff…
As usual, our blogger misses the bigger picture and the fact that we don’t need MORE…we need to continue to have less. In addition to Mexican and Latin American cartels now we have to face other “enrichment” from the Middle East and other shit holes from Africa. Wish you could live 200 yrs Cookie…to see what you liberal idiots are unleashing upon us.

Frank, it is simply false to say that immigration into the United States is uncontrolled. There are many controls on immigration into the United States.

It is also false to say that immigrants have the monopoly on crime in France. There are plenty of native-born French criminals, Frank.

You need to bring your rhetoric back in touch with reality.

Hey its me again and thanks for writing this article, but I’m not surprised at all about your findings. I have family in Minneapolis like many Somalis do, and I know how hard they have worked to open new businesses and restaurants in that community.

Over the past couple years they have even started to integrate into the police force and just 2 years ago Minneapolis had their first hijab wearing police officer. Of course it’s difficult to climb up the social ladder and build capital as first/second generation Americans but I know many, many success stories. Some of my friends/family have gotten into great schools: 2 to Columbia for journalism, 1 to Harvard law, 1 Carleton law and another who just accepted a PhD position at University of Toronto’s Women and Gender Studies Institute.

It’s kind of embarrassing that I have to go out of my way to explain that Somalis are just like everyone else, but i guess that’s how racism works.

Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes:

“The function, the very serious function, of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being. Somebody says you have no language, so you spend twenty years proving that you do. Somebody says your head isn’t shaped properly, so you have scientists working on the fact that it is. Somebody says you have no art, so you dredge that up. Somebody says you have no kingdoms, so you dredge that up. None of that is necessary. There will always be one more thing.” – Toni Morrison

    1. J Clifford says:

Thanks for your comment, S. It’s nice to have you here. There will always be one more thing, but we will do what we can to do the dredging alongside you.

Thanks for this, J, didn’t realize
