After Record Hottest Year, Globe sees Record Hottest January. UK Conservative Media Concludes…

Around the globe, over land and sea, 2015 was the hottest on record.  Now, according to data from NASA’s GISS unit, January 2016 was the warmest January on record by a significant margin, reaching 19% higher above the 1951-1980 global temperature average for January than any other January in any other year on record before, in a data collection record stretching all the way back to 1880.  This new record high is part of a long-term trend, as you can see below.

Guess how the conservative British “news”paper UK Express responded to this information?  That’s right, with a headline reading “What Global Warming?…”.  It seems no amount of information will convince people paid to determined to believe otherwise.

One factor was the “freak” winter storm on December 30, 2015 that caused the temperature at the North Pole to reach 32 degrees. At 50 degrees above normal, ice began melting. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2015/12/30/freak-storm-has-pushed-north-pole-to-freezing-point-50-degrees-above-normal/
Mashable reports that there was a greater snow fall in Washington DC in one snow storm than in Fairbanks, Alaska so far this winter. The Arctic has a reduced ice extent and is melting in February instead of increasing to its’ maximum for the winter. This is bound to have some effect on temperature and precipitation in the lower 48 this Spring and Summer.
