Do Not Become The Hate That You Deplore

Here at Iregular Times, we have repeatedly noted the unusual levels of violence by Donald Trump’s supporters at his political rallies. This morning, however, we have to take note of an unusual outburst of violence by anti-Trump protesters last night in Los Angeles.

17 protesters were arrested outside of a Donald Trump rally in California after some members of the crowd became violent, hurling rocks and other objects at passing vehicles and smashing a police car. It was not Trump supporters who became violent this time. It was Trump’s opponents.

These actions are not only wrong. They are idiotic. There is no plausible argument that can be made in favor of attacking other human beings and destroying police cars as a form of political opposition to a political candidate. The violence was completely pointless. Attacking passing motorists in the name of opposition to Donald Trump is like kicking a dog during an anti-war protest.

Americans oppose Donald Trump because of the cruel violence of his political positions. For anti-Trump protesters to be cruelly violent undermines this point. It also feeds into Trump’s authoritarian nationalist ideology, which claims that what America needs is a strong leader who will crush “bad guys” without compassion.

We should protest against Donald Trump. We should do it by embodying the higher ideals of nonviolent activism, not by sinking down to his level.

I agree that : “We should protest against Donald Trump.” Now, will you agree that we should protest against Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders?

      It depends what for.

Trying to finish destroying personal liberty. Advocating unlimited government. Terrible voting records in the US Senate. And much more.

        1. J Clifford says:

          Terrible voting records – vague.

          Advocating unlimited government – untrue.

Trying to finish destroying personal liberty – remarkably overstated and much more true of Clinton than Sanders.

          1. Al Hopfmann says:

If you believe that Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are not advocating unlimited government, then you are woefully naïve. Can you say, “socialized medicine”, “gun confiscation”, “subservience to the United Nations”, “racial categorization on Census forms”, “increased taxation”, “eminent domain”, “mandatory vaccinations”, “compulsory public service”, “politically correct speech”, “bathroom bill”, “carbon tax”, “need to change lifestyles” ?
Communism by any other name is still communism.
Unlimited government is the lifeblood of communism.

          2. Jim says:

You’re quoting yourself, Al. Some of your quoted text is odd, some has nothing to do with communism, some has nothing to do with either Clinton or Sanders. See, for instance, Pew’s fascinating record of US Census racial categorizations dating back to the 1700s:

          3. Al Hopfmann says:

“…some has nothing to do with communism” ???? All of the quoted items are things that present day communists advocate. Compare the actions, votes, and positions of Clinton and Sanders on each of these issues. They both want an all-powerful government (with themselves among the elite leaders) telling the rest of us how we may live and think.

          4. J Clifford says:

Communists also think that the sky is blue. Does that make thinking that the sky is blue Communism, Al?

Neither Hillary Clinton nor Bernie Sanders have ever said that they want government to be all powerful. In fact, both have taken steps to limit the power of government as members of the Senate.

You’re making up facts to suit your ideology, Al.

          5. Al Hopfmann says:

“Neither Hillary Clinton nor Bernie Sanders have ever said that they want government to be all powerful.” Remember, actions speak louder than words. Proposals and votes for compulsory socialized medicine (like Obamacare), votes to increase the power and reach of the United Nations, support for governmental racism (“affirmative action” ,racial identification of government forms, etc), destruction of the First and Second Amendments, increasing the power of the corrupt IRS, militarization and nationalization of local police forces, and so much more clearly show Clinton and Sanders to be advocates of all-powerful and unlimited government.

          6. Jim Cook says:

            In your mind.

          7. J Clifford says:

How is a “bathroom bill” unlimited government?

It’s by nature limited to bathrooms.

Your hyperbolic language makes your arguments absurd.

          8. Al Hopfmann says:

Unlimited government requires the destruction of privacy rights.
With regards to “hyperbolic”, it is said that when it comes to mathematics, there are three kinds of people — those who understand it , and those who don’t.
Rational principles based on liberty, privacy, decency, and love are not absurd.
Now, will you agree that we should also protest against Hillary Clinton and ?Bernie Sanders?
