Buzz Fiction: It Started With The Genetically-Modified Mosquitoes
This week it was announced that the Cayman Islands, Brazil and the United States are beginning new projects to release genetically-modified mosquitoes into the wild in order to battle the Aedes aegypti mosquito that spreads the terrible Zika virus. The mosquitoes are designed to breed with ordinary females, which then produce offspring that do not survive to adulthood. “It is important to explain that the males do not bite, do not transmit diseases and do not persist in the environment,” Dr. Renaud Lacroix from Oxitec, the British biotechnology company that invented the process to produce the genetically engineered insects, assured the public.
