Democratic Party Officials Planned To Attack Atheists In Order To Undermine Bernie Sanders

On the 5th of May, when the Democratic primary competition for delegates between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders was still going strong, the rules of the Democratic National Committee required the DNC to remain neutral, favoring neither candidate.

Behind the scenes, the DNC was breaking those rules. Leaked emails show that the supposedly neutral apparatus of the Democratic National Committee was operating as an extension of the Hillary Clinton campaign. The DNC’s resources and organizational networks were being deployed to prop up Hillary Clinton and to attack Bernie Sanders.

This massive violation of trust is bad enough. What makes it worse is that the DNC was planning to arouse religious bigotry as political weapon against Sanders.

An email sent on the afternoon of May 5th by DNC Chief Financial Officer Brad Marshall
to DNC Chief Executive Officer Amy Dacey, DNC Communications Director Luis Miranda, and DNC Deputy Communications Director Mark Paustenbach under the title “No Shit” read:

“It might may no difference, but for KY and WVA can we get someone to ask his belief. Does he believe in a God. He had skated on saying he has a Jewish heritage. I think I read he is an atheist. This could make several points difference with my peeps. My Southern Baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a Jew and an atheist.”

Brad Marshall’s plan was to rile up the most hateful factions of the Southern Baptists, encouraging them to spread a message religious discrimination in support of Hillary Clinton, and against Bernie Sanders. The content of the attack: Bernie Sanders can’t be elected President, because he’s secretly an atheist.

For eight years, Democrats have suffered from absurd accusations against Barack Obama, claiming that he is secretly a Muslim. Now, we see that the Democratic National Committee was preparing a similar nasty attack against Bernie Sanders.

No one at the DNC lifted a finger to protest this plan. The CEO of the DNC, Amy Dacey, endorsed the plan. Dacey responded to the email with a simple Christian message of affirmation written in all caps: “AMEN”.

This conspiracy within the DNC will obviously outrage supporters of Bernie Sanders, who were told that their candidate could compete for the Democratic nomination on a level playing field. They aren’t the only people who should be upset, however.

Atheists ought to be outraged at this. This email is a plain message that the Democratic Party establishment regards atheists as a vulnerable cultural minority that can be used as a target for scapegoating.

Members of other cultural minorities ought to be outraged at this. Brad Marshall’s email demonstrates that the DNC is willing to target vulnerable minorities for attack in order to stifle dissent and to protect the most powerful political elites.

Rank and file Democratic voters ought to be outraged at this. This email shows that the leaders at the DNC don’t want to allow Democrats to choose their own presidential candidate, but must be manipulated and lied to.

Intelligent voters of all beliefs will be outraged at this, because they’ll recognize that this email shows that the leaders of the DNC are willing to use religion as a weapon to turn Americans against each other.

I AM outraged at this. Not mostly that Marshall uttered such bigoted words (unfortunately, bigots are everywhere), but mostly that other DNC leaders endorsed this deeply bigoted, deeply divisive, deeply corrosive course of action — one that goes directly against the professed values of the Democratic Party. I am so glad this evening that I am not a member of the Democratic Party. Shame on the DNC leadership.

J., I would have thought by now you’d understand that “turning Americans against each other” is their stock and trade. Who, whom? is their mantra. Same for Republicans. I do understand your frustration with the cynical e-mail, but who the hell is Brad Marshall? Nobody I know.
