How Best To Respond to Death Threats Against a Legislator?
When your Governor calls a state legislator a “little son of a bitch socialist cocksucker” for daring to suggest that not every black or Hispanic person in Maine is “the enemy,” then publicly threatens to shoot the legislator in the head, then threatens to shoot people of color on top of all that, how do you possibly respond? When your Governor’s party backs him up and continues as if there has been no problem, no breach of the basic standards of civilization, what do you do?
Like many Mainers in the past week, David Weeda has been trying to figure out what to do. Governor Paul LePage has left behind all pretense of dignity and has shown no willingness to listen. Responding to reporters who have asked him questions about his conduct, Maine’s Governor LePage today declared “I will no longer speak to the press ever again after today.” LePage’s fellow Republicans in Maine have decided not to take any action against him for his conduct.
