Where is Donald Trump’s Crime Wave, “Rapidly Getting Worse?” Only in His Mind.

In his presidential campaign, Republican nominee Donald Trump has been proclaiming over and over that there’s a crime wave in America, that Americans are falling victim to crime more than ever, and that it’s “rapidly getting worse”:

Donald Trump tweets in July 2016: Crime is out of control, and rapidly getting worse. Look what is going on in Chicago and our inner cities. Not good!

Let’s look for that supposed crime wave, “rapidly getting worse,” in the new crime statistics collected by police across the country and compiled into the FBI’s Crime In the United States report.  The latest version of this report contains statistics all the way through the end of 2015 (we can’t have complete crime statistics on 2016 yet because 2016 isn’t over yet).

Here are the national statistics on violent crime rates in the United States, from 1996 to 2015:

Violent Crime Rate, 1996 to 2015

And here are the national statistics on property crime in the United States, also from 1996 to 2016:

Property crime rate per 100,000 population in the United States, 1996-2015

How about in Chicago?  Crime in the United States can tell us that, too:

Violent Crime is Down in Chicago in the last generation

Where is that wild crime wave, “rapidly getting worse?” Only in Donald Trump’s fervid imagination.

You don’t really think that any of Trump’s supporters can really be bothered with facts getting in the way of a good story, do you?

Frankly, I agree with you regarding his dire-hard supporters. Even if I don’t change any of their minds, though, sometimes it’s just important to say what’s so and isn’t so. I do hope that there are others on the margins who might take a look at the facts and change their mind.

I support neither Hillary nor Trump. However, the anti-gunners seem to be ignoring these facts too. If you listen to the Democrats, they sound just like Trump, and claim that violent crime is getting much worse in Chicago, and of course, for their agenda purposes we should outlaw certain scary-looking guns, and so forth.

I wouldn’t call myself a Clinton supporter either, and I definitely agree that many people are trying to inspire panic. People trying to clamp down on children’s freedom by imagining that school shootings are some new epidemic are another. Our kids are incredibly safe in their schools.
