Pipeline Explodes In Louisiana
A pipeline just west of New Orleans, owned and operated by Phillips 66, exploded last night, killing one worker, seriously injuring three others, and forcing the evacuation of an entire neighborhood as well as the closure of a nearby highway.
The pipeline, carrying liquid “natural” gas, has been shut off, but could burn out of control for days just from the material contained in the portion that exploded.
The pipeline explosion is releasing massive amounts of methane and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Both are greenhouse gases.
This pipeline accident comes just days after Donald Trump ordered construction of the Keystone XL and Dakota Access fossil fuels pipelines to go forward, over the objections of officials and citizens concerned that the new pipelines will be unsafe.
