Celebrate Charles Darwin February 12:Eleven years ago, in Palo Alto, a small group of people gathered to celebrate the anniversary of Charles Darwin's birthday. In a culture dominated by appeals to blind faith and the growing power of religious organizations in government and over educational institutions, they lauded the values of science, innovation, progress, and reason exemplified in Darwin's work.
Since that time, Darwin Day has blossomed into a thriving secular holiday celebrated around the world. Darwin Day celebrations are currently being prepared from Santa Cruz, Argentina, through Ireland, Nigeria and Australia, and all the way around the globe to Everett, Washington. With shameless assaults on science education by the religious supporters of Creationism and intelligent design theology, the importance of Darwin Day has never been greater.
You can see what events are planned near you at the site of Darwin Day Celebration, a nonprofit organization with a board of advisors that includes E. O. Wilson, Eugenie Scott, Carl Zimmer, and Richard Dawkins. If there isn't yet a Darwin Day holiday celebration listed near you, that's no problem - you can register your event at the organization's event center.
For our part, we at Irregular Times are introducing a new line of t-shirts, bumper stickers, greeting cards and more designed just for Darwin Day that will help you to spread the word about this increasingly relevant holiday.
