Irregular Times Diaries: Unfit DiscussionIn a time of the spring, old paths are obscured and new growth begins.
“We have become a nation ruled by fear.” says Mike Gravel.
As i see it, being ruled by fear is a pervasive trait in many American voters (not only with ‘conservatives’ or people claiming to be ‘in the middle’). So let us isolate this issue for a moment. Suppose many (if not most) people base there vote on the consolation-factor: Which candidate is best in addressing America’s fears?
I deliberately choose addressing, not solving, maybe ‘playing to’ is more apt (please ignore my lack of English subtlety) The Shrub (R.I.P. Molly Ivins) was good in it. Who’s the next best thing?
Picture of a great ‘consolator- in-chief’ and tell us which present presidential contenders pops to your mind, regardless of whether you would vote for them.

I’d say Illinois Senator Barack Obama is pretty good at it. I’m not just talking about his person — a black man — which embodies so many of the irrational American fears based in race. Senator Obama counters that, to be sure, but he also counters fears based in religious fundamentalism by at one time nodding to Americans’ right to free religious expression as individuals and at the same time setting a standard that policy decisions must be logically and empirically justifiable, and not based in religious reasoning. Have you also noticed that Senator Obama doesn’t spend his hours talking about the terrorists and how they’re gonna getcha?

I agree. Barack Obama also has a personal style which is calm and measured, not easily provoked. That’s a good response to fear - much better than George W. Bush flapping his arms and gaggling on about evildoers.

Which presidential contender pops into your mind, Yo.be?

I have no idea, i have no tv, and even i had one, i wouldn’t be able to see much of American Presidential candidates until the primaries.
The consolation factor i had in mind is something that works best through television (If you’ve seen Blair’s address in The Queen, you know what i mean).
It has little to do with policies or world view (once you know them theyy even get in the way of consolation). It’s the kind of thing that makes you think: ‘now, if (s)he had my political views (s)he’ld make a good politician’.
That said, i will make a wild guess and say Huckabee is the most misunderestimated contender in the Republican field.
