Irregular Times Diaries: Unfit DiscussionIn a time of the spring, old paths are obscured and new growth begins.
While Mitt Romney could only get $20 million in contributions, Rudy Giuliani had just $15 million and John McCain had to settle for a paltry $12.5 million, Hillary Clinton dominated with $26 million in campaign contributions. Hillary Clinton is simply dominant. And what is much more impressive than even that is that Senator Clinton managed to collect her $26 million in contributions with 80% of donors giving just $100 or less. These 80% — some 40,000 donors — represent the American heartland, not some bigwigs, and they will be able to give again and again and again as Senator Clinton needs the money without hitting campaign contribution maximums. The numbers alone show that Hillary Clinton is on her way to an impressive, dominating presence in the 2008 campaign. The big boys of Republican politics have nothing to show compared to Hillary Clinton.

That does look like true grassroots support.

It LOOKS like grassroots support. But take a look at where most of the money comes from. Although 80% of donations comes in less than $100 increments, where does most of the money originate?
There are two different numbers to consider:
- # of donations
- # of dollars
Which do you think Senator Clinton will listen to more?

Right. Even if all of those 40,000 donors giving $100 or less gave $100, that would account for only $4,000,000 (I can’t believe I’m writing “only $4,000,000) out of the full $26,000,000.

How does that compare with Unity08? Or for that matter with the Republican or any other contenders? Taking it at face value, I’m inclined to be impressed. Obama’s numbers weren’t released yet at the time of this writing, but there is speculation he will also make a strong showingboth with total contirbutions and with number of small donors.
To me this type of number represents the same thing your bumper sticker sales represent–committed support. While the larger contributors may make donations to both parties and several candidates, the smaller donors I think represent more of the grassroots voter. And while it’s true more money can get a candidate in the public eye and get the voters to the polls on election day, in the end you can’t directly buy votes. So to say the large donors, or the back-east, big-money movers and shakers have a larger say I don’t completely agree with.
The numbers are interesting because they tell a very different story from the very vocal and very visible anti-Clinton nutcases that sprout in the darkness of the blogosphere. The numbers make it look like Clinton has solid support from ordinary voters in the sensible heartland.

We will have to wait for the reports to be released later this month before we can tell anything about where these donations come from.
