Suspected Attackers Attack!

The people who performed the ambush performed an act of insurgency. So, how come they're described as suspected insurgents? Why not just call them insurgents?

Rahim Faiez writes for the Associated Press this morning, “Suspected insurgents ambushed a U.S.-led coalition and Afghan patrol in the volatile south, sparking a battle and airstrikes that killed 25 suspected insurgents, officials said Monday.”

Here’s what I don’t understand: The people who performed the ambush performed an act of insurgency. So, how come they’re described as suspected insurgents?

I’d write more about this, but a suspected baseball just made a suspected hole in my window, and I see a suspected kid running down the street. Gotta go.

  They are refered to as *suspected insurgents*, Sam, because they looked an awful lot like the Pakistani army and they were fighting on the side of the Taliban.

  No one wants to say they defeated the Pakistani army, because that would place a whole nother country in that fight in a region where no one wants another proxy war.

  Think of a person with a black eye saying they slipped and fell. There is probably a whole lot going on behind the scenes.

  Good luck finding anything, Peregrin. My source is that guy on late Sunday night NPR who drones on and on reading non-mainstream foreign news. This guy is where I first heard about Dubya sending a plane to pick up all the bin Laden family in the US right after 9-11, and now someone has written a book about that event. I checked the major wire services (and al-Jazeera) for the Pakistani thing the next morning and found nothing…except the head of NATO in Afghanistan was meeting with Bush that morning and Afghan prez Karzai issued a statement (from world economic forum in Jordan?) saying Afghanistan didn’t have a problem with Taliban but Pakistan did have one. Something is going on. Maybe an earlier wire service feed would have carried it?

  The report I heard said Pakistani army engaged the troops (Afghan and American not NATO) and American forces retreated to observe, then Afghan forces continued fighting and Am. forces retreated further after being bombed by Pakistanis at the observation point.

  You’re right. I can’t find a damn thing. So, maybe the suspected insurgents really are insurgents.

  Maybe if you call them suspected insurgents instead of Pakistanis, there is no international incident and Musharraf can go back to Congress and ask for more than the $750 million economic aid already announced in March for the Afghan border area.

  Wow.

  I knew that more than a few members of the Madhi Army have an Iraqi police or military uniform they wear from time to time.

  But it’s never occurred to me to wonder just how many members of the Taliban have a Pakistani police or military uniform tucked away in their closet.

  Jeez, it sounds like everybody’s just shooting at someone in one outfit, popping back home for a quick change, and shooting at someone else!
