Hilarious. I’m still puzzling about the bravery of the Iraqi fighters (they run away) and the supposed pipelines from Iraq to the Mediterranean. In modern times a pipeline runs as far as the Iraqi border with Jordan, with a refinery on the Jordan side of the border.
I’m not aware of any U.S. presence in Iraq during WWII. Baghdad was captured in May 1941 by British and Jordanian forces, and the pro-German ruler, Palestinian Haj Amin, escaped to Germany through Iran. Iraq was seen as strategically necessary for winning WWII because of the need to transport British troops overland through Iraq from India to Egypt and Palestine.
Africa was important, of course, because of it strategic location in oil shipping to fuel the war effort.
Might be an interesting bar graph–amount of oil consumed in various wars vs. oil consumed for domestic use.
