15,000 or More US Deaths in Iraq War?

The Pentagon has been concealing the true number of American casualties in the Iraq War. The real number exceeds 15,000 and CBS News can prove it.

CBS’s Investigative Unit wanted to do a report on the number of suicides in the military and “submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to the Department of Defense”. After 4 months they received a document which showed–that between 1995 and 2007– there were 2,200 suicides among “active duty” soldiers.

Baloney.

  The CBS News story obliquely referred to by Whitney seems to be primarily about veterans committing suicide after leaving active duty.

  It looks like either Whitney totally misunderstands the story he bases this paragraph on or he is deliberately trying to mislead.

  Curious website, though. Tries to prove Halabja didn’t happen or something like that. My Kurdish friends would be unhappy to hear that.

  Interesting that this site claims to be “opposition” from inside Iraq, that it has been inactive so long, and now has a new article posted.

  Let me mention another thing. Last night after accessing the articles Jim links to, my computer went out to lunch and I had to do several CTRL ALT DEL sequences to run shutdown. Did the Uruknet site eat my computer? I went to Disk Cleanup and there had been 40M suddenly downloaded. Sometimes I will see half a meg after browsing a lot, or even a little over a meg if I’ve been looking at videos, but NEVER 40 Meg.

  From the DDOS attacks that IT and other sites have experienced we have found out that the al-Firdaws script kiddies–under orders from none other than ben Laden himself–use zombie computers to carry out their denial-of-service attacks. If you enter one of their sites, your computer can be infected and used to carry out these attacks without your knowledge. Why do they have a note at the bottom of their home page that tells you what operating system you are using and encourages you to try other platforms? Why are they so into what platform you have? And why do they REALLY have so many mirror sites with similar names? Could it be these are all supposed to get linked together during a DDOS attack?

  Don’t worry though, I’m sure homeland security is on the trail, as soon as they get done checking all the toothpaste at the airport.

  In the meantime, if you go visit that site, you might want to wipe your feet when you come out.

  Thanks for the link, David.

  The title is misleading. Here’s what the CBS article actually says:

  So CBS News did an investigation – asking all 50 states for their suicide data, based on death records, for veterans and non-veterans, dating back to 1995.

  So it looks like they are looking at data for the whole population and veterans of all wars, not just for Iraq veterans.
  Then it says:

  It found that veterans were more than twice as likely to commit suicide in 2005 than non-vets. (Veterans committed suicide at the rate of between 18.7 to 20.8 per 100,000, compared to other Americans, who did so at the rate of 8.9 per 100,000.)

  but one of the commenters, ilewis22, says something interesting:

  …the CBS story is very flawed. They compared to numbers that have no demographic relation. The military is over 80% male and approx 60 % white, and 74% in the 18 to 30 age range. If you compare suicide rates keeping the demographics consistent the difference in suicide rates is less than .3 percent.

  So how did CBS do their study? Did they control for age, race, etc., when they compared their populations? The unclear way CBS uses statistics here is more likely to decrease concern for veterans. And the Whitney report on the study is just blatantly irresponsible.
