Dodd opposed Peace Corps Safety and Security legislation

While I have yet to see any official announcement saying Chris Dodd is no longer a candidate for president, I don’t see his name on the list for the New Hampshire debate Saturday either.  I had sort of hoped that he would add his voice to those standing against the current erosion of freedom.

But some of have not forgotten his role in killing S.2454, the safety and security bill for Peace Corps volunteers, either. The bill passed the house, was introduced in the Senate by Republican Sen. DeWine and Democratic Sen. Durbin, but was killed in Dodd’s Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Peace Corps, and Narcotics Affairs of the Senate Foreign Relations committee.

Chris Dodd could have gotten that bill out onto the Senate floor for the vote it deserved.

  Congress already created the OSS at PC after Walter Porrier(sp) disappeared. The jobs and the money were already at Peace Corps and the ombudsman removed from the OSS.

  Interesting comments. I don’t know enough about the Peace Corps issue myself to offer my thoughts, except to note that it would be extremely curious for Chris Dodd to act against the interests of the Peace Corps, given that he was a Peace Corps volunteer himself.

  Chris Dodd has indeed dropped out of the presidential campaign, but even if he had stayed in, he wouldn’t have qualified for the next set of debates – too low of a performance in Iowa.

  Dodd’s interest is more in the jobs provided for staff at PC than the PCVs. Dodd was also in the military. PC has become dangerous for PCVs because they stay in military coup countries, which technically they have no legal agreement to be. This has happened allot and the funding for military programs to those countries go up. The additional 10 million came from those programs because Dodd wanted to make a point. The point is that PC is competing for those funds and getting those funds. They should not be in the military coup countries to begin with and the reasoning is the jobs provided to the staff in those countries is important.

  Dodd also had an ambassador removed and replaced with an X PCV after a PC staff member was fired for violating a security procedure basic to PC. She was later hired at PC DC and classified, which is how staff gets promoted and has the Director waive the five year employment law. Dodd completely passed on the security issue and took care of everyone but the PCVs, who were threatened while all this happened. After the procedures were checked and put in place there were car bombings in London by Doctors.

  There are plenty of issues. Dodd is probably too willing to put PCVs in harms way to keep the funding and staff employees.

  ‘Military coup country’? Is this like former Soviet bloc or maybe more like Ethiopia? How do you “violate a security procedure”? This same person is the one who got rehired? The new security department is not under the 5 year rule–it’s now a two-tier system.

  Yes, Dodd defends the PC as an agency, not the volunteers.
