Irregular Times Diaries: Unfit DiscussionIn a time of the spring, old paths are obscured and new growth begins.
Right wing Republicans keep on saying that it’s okay to deny same-sex couples equal protection under the law as guaranteed by the Constitution because same-sex marriages are inherently unnatural. The idea is that anything unnatural is therefore ungodly. Of course, these Republicans don’t spend their time attacking unnatural things like cars, or light bulbs, or chewy granola bars. Their righteous wrath is oddly restrained to just same-sex marriage.
The scientific truth is that same-sex marriages are not really unnatural at all. There are many examples of same-sex reproduction in nature. In fact, in many species, three are no males at all - only females who breed with each other. Then there are hermaphrodites, like snails, and even fruit trees. Oh, the immorality!
Today there’s a report of research by Lindsay Young, a graduate student at the University of Hawaii. Her studies have included observations of lesbian albatrosses setting up long-term nesting relationships with each other that involve considerable physical intimacy.
Same-sex marriage occurs in nature, it seems. Therefore, same-sex marriage is natural. By the standards of right wing Republicans, that ought to mean that evangelical churches should start pushing Congress to make same-sex marriage legal across the United States.
How likely do you think that is it happen? Maybe the right wing Republicans’ efforts to deny equal protection under the law to same-sex couples doesn’t have a thing to do with what’s natural. Maybe they’re just jerks.

So now we are comparing ourselves to plants and snails? These examples merely show diversity of design. The bird-brained example is no big find… women have shared in nurturing duties throughout history and across myriad species. Furthermore, just because something is deemed “natural” does not automatically make it good. Strychnine is natural too.
I personally find it difficult to stomach that there are so few in positions of prominence willing to speak the truth regarding the blatant intellectual dishonesty and governmental irresponsibility inherent in any validation of biologically nonsensical reproductive behavior. No one can tell another person that they cannot privately engage in such folly yet it remains highly irresponsible to encourage it. Those who attempt to place acceptance of homosexuality on par with valid claims to race and gender equality have serious cognitive deficiencies. Who we unchangeably are is written into our DNA (race, gender etc.) and not defined by malleable, environmentally-influenced behavioral tendencies. There is not nor will there ever be discovered a “gay” gene, so placing opposition to governmental validation of homosexual behavior on even footing with discrimination against any verifiable DNA determined trait is foolish. What exactly is gained by society or moreover, what is this strange societal interest in perpetuating continued dysfunction in others? While we must accept that these behaviors will likely always exist within our society and that we should never breed hatred toward anyone, we still must demand intellectual honesty and responsibility from our leaders regarding these behaviors that must truly be recognized as the dysfunction that they are.

Chocolate is the best flavor! Those who prefer vanilla must die! DIE! Or at least not be considered equal with the chocoholics. They should not be allowed to consume their white substance. Why do they refuse chocolate anyway? Is it because it’s brown?! Hmmm?! Why are the vanilla lovers so racist? Yet another example of their stunning immorality.
