Irregular Times Diaries: Unfit DiscussionIn a time of the spring, old paths are obscured and new growth begins.
I’m looking for a little quick help in identifying this mushroom.
It’s in the eastern United States, second growth maple-beech-pine forest with some birch and black cherry, along with tulip poplar trees.
Is it edible?

Hi,
I’m sure this mushroom is long gone, but I just stumbled across your entry. I’m a PhD student in mycology.
It’s hard to tell from just a photo, but it looks like what you have there is either a Boletus, Gyroporus or Leccinum. I can’t identify to species without a clearer photo, microscopic examination and a couple of chemical tests, but I can tell you that this mushroom is not lethal. It might taste bad (bitter), and it might be a gastric irritant, but it absolutely won’t do any damage to you unless you have some medical condition or allergy to mushrooms.
If you find more of these, let me know (my blog is called Hyphoid Logic, http://vyoma108.blogspot.com) and I’ll try to help you in identifying it.
