Irregular Times Diaries: Unfit DiscussionIn a time of the spring, old paths are obscured and new growth begins.
I find It rather interesting that so many among us worry about what conservative websites publish or promote. Have there been acts of violence as a result of sites such as Rightwingstuff documented anywhere…do they compare to the acts of violence that occur in “my Philadelphia” each day. Lets consider the future and dwell less upon the past. We can remind ourselves of our struggles and be sure that they are not forgotten while holding ourselves accountable along the way. As a student and instructor of history I recognize the importance of understanding and explaining the past but also see far too many wanting and willing to use the past as a crutch and as an excuse for their shortcomings today.
Clean up your own backyard! Joseph

I find it rather interesting that your standard for the appropriateness of worry about something is whether or not that thing has resulted in acts of violence.
By that standard, the Iranian bounty on Salman Rushdie would not have been an appropriate thing to worry about. It did not, after all, lead to an act of violence. Of course, this is absurd. A call for violence need not lead to an identifiable act of violence to be an appropriate thing to worry about.
I find it rather interesting that an instructor of history would fail to acknowledge that, whereas a simple causative relationship between a single utterance of a violent slogan and a particular act of violence is rarely easy to establish, the proliferation of violent slogans nevertheless contributes to an overall social climate in which violence is promoted and tolerated.
I find very interesting indeed that a supposed expert in history would fail to acknowledge something so basic. I am not certain whether your failure in this regard is a result of a congenitally weak intellect, habitual cognitive laziness, adherence to some ideology or another that stunts systematic thinking, or a willingness to misrepresent reality when it serves the needs of your current rhetorical project. Whatever the case may be, your students have my sympathies.
I much appreciate your advice to clean up my own back yard. I have a large magnolia tree that shades the entire yard to the point that it is difficult to grow even grass. Furthermore, the tree constantly sheds leaves all year around, and I have to rake them every two weeks or so. Now, between the shade, the constant fall of leaves, and the continual raking, it is hard to get any sort of ground cover to grow at all. I am left with bare dirt that the raking only serves to stir up all the more. What do you suggest I do to clean it up? Thanks very much, it is good to know you care.

Ralph, just let the moss grow - on your back yard and on “conservative” websites. “Conservative”?!? Who’s a conservative any more?
