Why Must We Accept Risky Offshore Drilling?

Why does Brian Baird say that we must we accept that offshore drilling for oil in the riskiest deepwater environments is going to take place?

In a hearing of the House Science and Technology Subcommittee on Energy and Environment yesterday, Chairman Brian Baird declared that, “Whether the moratorium on drilling activities in the Gulf is lifted in 30 days or 30 years, we must accept that the hydrocarbon reserves in these fields will be produced someday.”

Why? Why must we accept that offshore drilling for oil in the riskiest deepwater environments is going to take place?

Don’t we have the freedom to choose another course? Is our government that much in the thrall of the oil industry that our leaders will accept no possibility of an end to deepwater offshore drilling?

  Why must we address unfounded (in fact completely unverifiable in the present) assertions from Mr. Baird as if they were offered in the spirit of honest, rational debate? Especially when the regressives will not accept repeatedly confirmed scientific findings as part of the debate.

  Clearly we are under no obligation, and I do not fault you for asking rhetorically.

  I’ve been rather, um, *impressed* by the way that the Democrats and Republicans have led the media to frame the response to the oil spill in terms of piddling little inconsequential shifts in regulation, rather than the strong changes in energy policy that we really need.

  If it’s true that we are so pathetic that we will never escape our dependence on fossil fuel energy until we run out, then the increasing price of oil should easily outpace inflation. That would make the oil much more valuable if it is extracted in 30 years rather than today. Of course that future value would go to the people or corporations of that time rather than corporations who Baird favors today.
