Consolator-in-Chief

“We have become a nation ruled by fear.” says Mike Gravel.

As i see it, being ruled by fear is a pervasive trait in many American voters (not only with ‘conservatives’ or people claiming to be ‘in the middle’). So let us isolate this issue for a moment. Suppose many (if not most) people base there vote on the consolation-factor: Which candidate is best in addressing America’s fears?

I deliberately choose addressing, not solving, maybe ‘playing to’ is more apt (please ignore my lack of English subtlety) The Shrub (R.I.P. Molly Ivins) was good in it. Who’s the next best thing?

Picture of a great ‘consolator- in-chief’ and tell us which present presidential contenders pops to your mind, regardless of whether you would vote for them.

the heresy of literalism

Gerard Reve, one of the greatest Dutch writers died last week. He was catholic and gay.

“But the bible is against this” a journalist once told him, “If you reason that way, you have to be against women’s voting rights and start burning witches again… the bible is can hold up to criticism, but it can’t hold up to the heresy of literalism.”
